World’s longest escalator – The world’s longest escalator is in Hong Kong, called the Central–Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system. It is the longest in the world because it comes with a combination of escalators and moving walkways. This entire escalator connects two parts of Hong Kong the Central business district and the Mid-Levels residential area. It was built in 1993.
We have always seen that for traveling between two ends, there are different transport modes like taxis, buses, trains, etc., but in Hong Kong they have created a direct escalator to connect the two ends.
Since this is a combined escalator system, it has 18 escalators and 3 moving walkways. Some of its special features are like
- Its length is 2,600 feet (800 meters).
- Its height is 443 feet.
- Its width is 3 feet.
- The most important thing is its speed, which is 0.6 meters per second.
- Traveling through this escalator takes around 20 minutes.
The main purpose of this escalator system was to overcome the steep hill between the Central business district and the Mid-Levels residential area. Considering the steep geographical environment of Hong Kong, this system makes daily commuting much easier. Around 85,000 people use this escalator every day, and its capacity is 7,000 people per hour.
One major special feature of this escalator is that it is part of an integrated transport system. This means different modes of transportation (escalators and walkways) connect seamlessly, which is very convenient for local residents.
This escalator was needed because the distance and vertical height between Central and Mid-Levels was so large that walking was very difficult. To overcome this steep slope and help people travel quickly and safely from one area to another, the escalator was built.
