Ragging and Student Safety: Kerala’s Case Raises Urgent Questions

Ragging is not a new word for us, but has it really been eliminated? recently a case of ragging has come to light in a well-known institute in Kerala, where a junior student was subjected to severe torture by senior students. We know that colleges and institutes provide education, but are students truly safe in these institutions? The ongoing Kolkata rape and murder case, along with this recent ragging incident, should prompt the government to seriously pay attention to these issues.

The ragging incident occurred at government nursing college Kottayam College, a well-known educational institution in Kerala. While the institution has received recognition for its excellence in education, this terrible incident has highlighted major concerns about student safety and the need for stronger anti-ragging policies in colleges and universities.

The victim of the ragging was a first-year undergraduate student whose name has been hidden for privacy concerns. According to reports, senior students tortured the victim badly both mentally and physically. These students who were later identified, face charges of bullying, abuse, and physical harm.

Authorities decided that the act was part of a larger pattern of ragging at the campus. The guilty students, a group of seniors, are under investigation, and their identities have been made public. Arrested students are Rahul Raj, NS Jeeva, NP Vivek, Rigil Jeeth, and Samuel Johnson.

Following the occurrence, the college administration took swift action to resolve the situation. The offending students have been suspended pending further inquiry. Local police have also stepped in pressing charges against the offenders. In addition, the institution has formed a committee to investigate any previous occurrences of ragging at the college.

The Kerala government has published a statement emphasising its anti-ragging stance and declaring stricter surveillance in educational institutions. Furthermore, the National Anti-Ragging Helpline has been launched to provide assistance to victims and prevent future crimes.
