Why was King Tutankhamun’s tomb different from others?

When King Tutankhamun died, he was around 19 years old and belonged to the 18th Dynasty. The tombs of the other pharaohs(King) of the 18th Dynasty were found in the Valley of the Kings, such as the tombs of Ramses and Thutmose. The Valley of the Kings, located near Luxor (Egypt), was a major burial site during the New Kingdom. This valley contains more than 60 tombs, including those of many pharaohs and high-ranking officials.

However, their tombs were located in separate chambers and were richly decorated, with many precious jewels. In contrast, Tutankhamun tomb was found to be simple, with no special decorations. The reason behind this remains a mystery to this day. Still, despite its simplicity, over 5,000 remarkable artifacts were found in the tomb, which amazed the world when it was discovered.

How did the tomb remain hidden and preserved for centuries?

In ancient times, the tomb was covered by waste from the Nile River flood. The entrance was hidden under the soil and trash., making it invisible to anyone. Eventually, in November 1922, Howard Carter discovered this tomb, which is considered one of the greatest archaeological finds in history.

Tutankhamun’s tomb is special because it had remained hidden from the outside world, while many other tombs had been looted. This tomb was the only one found in a well-preserved state, filled with thousands of treasures, jewelry, garments, and other royal items. The biggest mystery surrounding it is the question: how did King Tutankhamun die? This remains an unanswered question, despite extensive research.

What was found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb?

The tomb contained several distinctive objects, as well as items reflecting daily life, such as:

  • A golden throne and treasure, which symbolized Tutankhamun’s royal power, coated with paintings and writings.

  • Canopic jars containing his internal organs.

  • Everyday items such as sandals, chairs, foodstuffs, and board games, offering a glimpse into daily life during his time.

  • Weapons such as bows and daggers, which were featured in the art of the period. Additionally, many other artifacts were found.

Was the curse of King Tutankhamun’s tomb real?

Nearly a year after the tomb was opened, Lord Carnarvon, who was with Howard Carter on the excavation, suddenly died. Along with his death other individuals involved in the excavation also suffered untimely deaths. This led to the emergence of the “curse of Tutankhamun’s tomb.”

Rumors spread that there were ancient magical spells protecting the pharaoh and punishing tomb robbers. However, research has shown that there is no evidence that these deaths were caused by a curse. Researchers suggest that most of the deaths were due to natural diseases or the toxic mold in the sealed chambers—since toxic substances were used in the tombs for protection—rather than any mysterious causes.

Today, the tomb is located in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt, and has become a popular tourist attraction.
