World’s Most Haunted Place : A Place of Death and Mystery

The World’s Most Haunted Place, We have recently come out of a major pandemic, but this wasn’t the first pandemic. There have been others before it. Poveglia Island is a small island located in the Lagoon of Venice near Venice, Italy. The story of this island is very old and because of this it is considered one of the most haunted places in the world.

What is its story?

In the 14th century, Europe was struck by a terrible disease The Black Plague which spread so widely that the Italian government had to choose an island as a quarantine station. That island was Poveglia. People affected by the plague were sent here where they were isolated from the rest of society.

However, this solution may not have worked as well as expected. According to the stories surrounding the island everyone who was brought there eventually died and their bodies were either buried or burned on the island. It is said that more than 100,000 people died on this island and it is believed that 50% of the island is filled with human ash.

What is the story that gave it the “haunted” reputation?

A few years later, in 1922 a mental asylum was established on the island. However, in 1968 it was shut down and there are many reasons and mysteries behind this. It is said that there are many scary stories about the doctors and staff working there.

Some of the weird stories about the doctors involve them torturing patients for experimental purposes. According to the press, one doctor committed suicide unexpectedly, and there is still no clear reason for why.

Patients at the asylum were reportedly facing a variety of horrific visuals shadows, and paranormal events, which made situation worse day by day.. Finally, in 1968, the asylum was closed down.

After everything was over, visitors and explorers who went to the island described unusual and mysterious happenings like as hearing voices and screams, seeing shadowy figures, feeling cold places, and having a constant feeling of being followed.

Is it still operational today?

Poveglia Island is no longer publicly accessible. The Italian government has closed it off and tourism has been restricted because considering its history and paranormal activities the place is deemed dangerous, disturbing and the world’s most haunted place.
